CURB RASH

Powder Coating

POWDER COATING

Powder coating is a process in which ground particles made of pigment and resin are electrically charged and sprayed onto a metal surface, such as your wheel rims. The electrostatic charge allows these particles to adhere to the metal surface. The rims are then “baked,” which allows these particles to blend together and cure. The end result is a durable, quality surface coat and finish that looks amazing.

While there are many reasons to powder coat your wheel rims, here are what we think are the top four benefits:

  • Higher Resistance: Wheel rims see a lot of action. Corrosion, chipping and flaking can be caused by exposure to outdoor elements, not to mention damage from road debris like stones and gravel. Powder coating creates a non-porous surface shield that is more resistant than traditional liquid paints, which means that your powder-coated rims will be able to withstand even the most unforgiving road environments.
  • Durability: Once the powder coating particles are sprayed onto your wheel rims, the rims are baked in an oven at very high temperatures. This baking process not only causes the particles to fuse together, but it actually allows the powder coating to cure. The end result is a thicker, more durable surface coverage. In fact, under the same conditions, powder coating lasts up to three times longer than traditional painting.
  • Better for the Environment: Opting to use powder coating over liquid paints is better for the environment. Liquid paints contain volatile organic compounds that are harmful to the ozone, as well as to anyone who breathes them in. Plus, excess liquid paint is nearly impossible to capture and reuse. Powder coating, on the other hand, contains no dangerous VOCs and any excess powder can easily be recycled.
  • Better Coverage: Powder coating provides better coverage compared to liquid paints. For some complexly designed wheel rims, certain facets of the rim can be difficult to reach with liquid paints. With powder coating, however, due to the electrostatic method combined with the curing process, even the most difficult-to-reach parts of the rim get adequate coverage.

WHEEL STRAIGHTENING

Potholes, curbs, road hazards and debris can cause bends to the inner or outer lip of your wheel. This can result in uneven tire wear, vibrations at high speeds and even the very safety of your vehicle. In most cases, bent wheels can be expertly repaired by the West Coast Wheel Repair professionals using our sophisticated hydraulic system and precision measurement indicator equipment.

Once the wheel straightening process is complete, your wheel is ready to have its tire mounted, balanced and reinstalled on your vehicle to get you moving smoothly and safely again.

machined finish

MACHINED FINISH

The Machined Finish wheel is created using a CNC lathe. The machine digitally scans the profile of the wheel and the CNC lathe cuts off a hair-width of aluminum using a diamond-tipped probe to create the polished looking finish. It looks a little like a brushed finish except it will catch and reflect light, like the bottom of a CD, and create a rainbow spectrum. The wheel pictured here captures this rainbow effect quite well because the clear coat finish has not yet been applied. Once the clear coat step is finished, the brightness dulls slightly but the effect is still captivating.

Hyper Silver wheel

HYPERSILVER FINISHES

Hypersilver is a multi-stage paint process that uses a translucent metallic outer paint laid over a colored undercoat to give the wheels a deep inner glow. Done correctly, it can attract attention to your wheels without the flash of chrome, and without detracting from the beauty of your car.

Originally developed in Germany, hypersilver first appeared only on some BMW, Audi and Saab models, but the look has become extremely popular and now most carmakers offer wheels with this high-end looking finish. Contact West Coast Wheel Repair today at 650-520-7840.
